4. Ilam
Located in the far east of Nepal, 90km from the Kakarbhitta boundary, Ilam is accessible via the Mechi Highway, one of the great country lanes of the Terai, with lots of winding roads, dizzying drops and views of the valley. It’s in good form as well. You can note the quaint wooden buildings upon entering the mountain village, their balconies thrust out across the busy lane.
Ilam is associated with one thing-tea, like its neighbor Darjeeling across the frontier. The two share an almost similar climate and topography, but by far the better known is Darjeeling tea. In the refreshing mountain air, the tea fields that cover the nearby hills make for a very relaxing stroll.
5. Poonhill
Poon Hill is a hill station on the border of Myagdi District and Kaski District in Nepal’s Gandaki Pradesh, overlooking the Annapurna Massif range and Dhaulagiri mountain range. Mountains such as 7,219 meters from Annapurna South, 6,993 meters from Machapuchare, Himchuli, Annapurna III, Dhampus hill, Dhulariri II, and several other high peaks can be seen from here.
Poon Hill is situated approximately 270 km west of Kathmandu. The hiking from Pokhara to Poon Hill takes 2–3 days. The Poon Hill viewpoint is situated in the middle of the Annapurna Protected Area on the road to the Annapurna Sanctuary. 6. Everest Region
In the world of trekking, the Solukhumbu area has an almost mythical reputation as the primary approach route to Mt Everest. Probably the most popular trek in the world is the two-week climb to Everest Base Camp, and every year, tens of thousands of trekkers tackle the route for grandstand views of the tallest mountain in the world and its much more spectacular neighbors, Lhotse and Nuptse.
Because of the altitude, trekking in the Everest area is difficult, but the trekking infrastructure is highly built and you seldom have to walk more than an hour to reach the next trekking lodge. On the plus side, this means Mars bars at high altitude and an unrivaled camaraderie in trekking. On the flip side, perspectives are packed and by mid-afternoon, lodges will fill up.

7. Annapurna Base Camp
Located 40 km immediately north of Pokhara, the Annapurna Base Camp is a high glacial basin. At an altitude of over 4000 meters, this oval-shaped plateau is surrounded by a ring of mountains, the Annapurna range, most of which are over 7000 meters high. Situated under the enormous south face of Annapurna, it is a classic trek to the Annapurna base camp. The trek passes through Nepal’s middle hills with the Gurung villages and oak, magnolia and rhododendron forests. Then the trail parallels the Modi Khola River to the Sanctuary, where you reach a secret amphitheatre with a spectacular view of snowy peaks. While there are some steep climbs and a few short bridges, this is not an especially challenging hike.
If you want to get into the high Himalayas without the longer acclimatization time needed for some of the other treks, it is a pleasant trek to do. The highest altitude attained at Annapurna Base Camp is 4,130m.
8. Rara Lake
Rara Lake Trek is a rare chance to be one of those who have traveled on western Nepal’s remote trails. It’s the largest lake in Nepal and the Queen of Lakes is proudly addressed by the Nepalese. Not only will you be in the midst of snow capped mountains, trees and enchanting lakes on your journey, but you will also be experiencing the rustic life of the locals who make this remote land their home.
Rara is a good trekking destination in the west. The trail is very much “off the beaten path” and gives very different glimpses of culture and nature than those in the rest of the world. The centerpiece of the park is Nepal’s largest pool.

9. Shey Phoksundo Lake
Shey Phoksundo Lake trek falls below the Lower Dolpo area, which is one of the adventure lovers’ most praised treks. The main draw of this trek is the freshwater lake, which is the deepest and second largest lake in Nepal, at an altitude of 3,612 m (11,850 ft) from sea level. There is no sort of marine life in the turquoise blue lake and it is also venerated as a holy lake. A view of beauty is the bright blue hue of the lake with Ringmo village on its southern shore and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.
10. Mustang Region
Welcome to the former Buddhist kingdom of Mustang, one of the most dramatic and wild corners of Nepal, spreading north from the Annapurna mountain range. Mustang is the stuff of trekking fantasies with its impressive scenery and everlasting Himalayan villages. Everyone but the most dedicated hikers are discouraged by high permit costs, but the reward is a landscape of wind-eroded Buddhist chortens (stupas) and ringing ridgelines that reach wave-like to the horizon. Although every trekking season brings in more of the modern world, at least for now, the picture of Shangri-La remains intact.
Mustang looks very distinct from the rest of the Nepal Himalaya, because it’s different geologically speaking. This is the Transhimalaya, in the monsoon rain shadow north of the main Himalayan range, a parched slice of ancient seabed thrown skyward and marooned. Mustang has more in common with the Ngari region of Western Tibet than other areas of Nepal in culture and topography.
